Young So Piano Studio
Performances
Here are excerpts of some of my students playng the piano. These performances are divided into three levels - early footsteps, intermediate and advanced.
Early Footsteps
In general, children can start playing the piano around the age of 5. This is a good age where they have an understanding of numbers and the alphabet. This is a time where the basic foundations of playing the piano is taught - playing techniques such as posture and finger/wrist movements, theory such as counting and reading the music, and simple musical concepts.
Intermediate
Students at this level of playing should have a good foundation of playing. Most intermediate level pieces are gauged when they start sonatinas and fugues. Their phrasings are a little more structured and discipline of musicality is taught Sightreading is another skill that is taught along with more difficult music theory.
Advanced
Students at this level play at a high technical level and they more freely control their expression with accordance to the type of piece at hand.
While I do emphasize the strong basics, piano should be utmost fun and enjoyable. Building a good teacher-student relationship will bring confidence to the child's playing with each step. Parents should partake the most active role in the earliest stage. I encourage parents to sit in the lessons and see what are the correct playing techniques so that during their practice times reinfocement of concepts can be seen. Students with this kind of support advance at a faster level. With time permitting, I sometimes recommend piano lessons twice a week. Building confidence with each successful step is important. With a little bit of perserverance and practice, they should blossom very nicely to the each level.
